The local demand for barley stands at about 100,000 metric tonnes of barley annually. Currently an estimated 2,000 farmers in Kapchorwa district have taken up barley farming.

  • The Kapchorwa farmers produce over 5,000 metric tonnes of Barley annually and farmers in Kabarole and Kasese districts have also been encouraged to take advantage of the growing market for malt barley in Uganda. In addition to its robust flavor, barley's claim to nutritional fame is based on its being a very good source of molybdenum, manganese, and selenium, and a good source of copper, vitamin B1, chromium, phosphorus, magnesium, and niacin. Barley is also an excellent source of fiber, which helps lower the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, thereby decreasing the risk of heart disease
